Magic Categories
From StampWantsWiki
When creating listings on StampWants, using the Bulk Upload process, you must specify the category you want your item to be listed in. To do so, you have two options. You can either use the exact category code, as found on the Category Codes page, or you can use one of the Magic Categories. Magic Categories are only available for use in the Bulk Uploader, and automatically detect the most appropriate category for your item.
Please Note: Magic Categories are provided as a convenience to sellers. However, StampWants is not responsible if your items are listed in the wrong categories. Whenever possible, we recommend that you use the actual category code of the category you want to list in to ensure that your item is listed in the category that you want it to be listed in. Additionally, please read over the description of each Magic Category carefully.
| Category Code | For Use With | Description |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | United States Stamps | Category Code: 1 is a special code for use with United States Stamps, that will look at the first "word" in the title, which needs to be a Scott Number. It will also look for the keywords Mint, MH, MNH, Used or UnUsed in your title to determine the appropriate category for that item. So for example, if the title is 550, Mint XF NH Jumbo With PFC Cat $100.00+ it would know that a # 550 Mint belongs in the 1901-1940 UnUsed category. This applies to all Back of the Book items as well. The only time you would not want to use the special Category Code: 1 for a United States stamp is if you do not want it to be placed in a category based on its Scott number. For example, if you are listing a Plate Block and you want it to be listed in the Plate Block category (or it is an EFO, or a Sheet, etc); or if it is not a regular issue or a back of the book item (such as possession, Confederate States, etc). In these cases, you should just use the category code as indicated on the Category Codes page. This will work as long as you start with the US Scott Number, such as 550, or a number sign and the Scott number, such as #550. |
| 3 | Non United States Stamps | Category Code: 3 is a special code for use with Non United States Stamps, which will look at the first "word" in the title, which needs to be the country. So for example, Austria # 1 would automatically be placed in Austria. For any country which has multiple sub-categories, like Canada and Great Britain, you should not use the Category Code: 3, but instead find the appropriate category code you want to place your listing in. You will also need to find the appropriate category code you want to place your listing in if you want your item to appear in a Topical category, or any other category which is not determined by the country. |
| 7 | Topical Stamps | Category Code: 7 is a special code for use with Topical stamps, which will look at the title, and from that determine which topical category the item belongs in. So for example, an item titled Elvis Stamp would automatically be placed in Topicals -> Famous People -> Singers. Another example, an item titled Stamp picturing of Swimming Dolphins would automatically be placed in Topicals -> Animal -> Marine Life. Of course we can't magically figure out which topical category every single stamp fits perfectly into, because we may not have a particular famous person, or specific type of animal in our database. However, we do have the most common (common as in most commonly depicted on stamps). We recommend that if you use this magic category you carefully review which category was selected for your item on the Bulk Uploader v3.0 review/activate step (step 3 of 3). If you need to make any changes you can do so on this step by double clicking on the category and choosing a different one. |
| 9 | United States and Non United States stamps | Category Code: 9 is a special code for use with United States and Non United States Stamps. If the list begins with either a number sign, or an actual number, Magic Category Code 1 (United States) will be used. Otherwise, Magic Category Code 3 (Non United States) will be used. Please review the above information on Magic Category Codes 1 and 3 for further information. |
| 11 | United States Coins | Category Code: 11 is a special code for use with United States Coins (not paper money), which will look at the title and determine which category your item best belongs to. Your title must include both the year and denomination of the coin, or else it will not work properly. This magic category will also work with commemoratives, mint/proof sets and U.S. gold coins. The only time you would not want to use the magic Category Code 11 for a United States coin is if the title does not include a year and denomination. |
| 13 | Non United States Coins | Category Code: 13 is a special code for use with Non United States Coins, which will look at the first "word" in the title, which needs to be the country. So for example, Canada 1999 Loonie would automatically be placed in Coins (Canada) -> Dollars and Loonies. For any country which has multiple sub-categories, such as Canada, France, Germany and Great Britain (as well as a few others), you will need to include the year and denomination of the coin in the title. |
