During the battle for Okinawa, 10 April - 15 July, 1945, He and his pilots shot down 124-1/2 enemy planes. He and eleven (11) other pilots earned the title of "ACE" (5 or more "Kills"). The Squadron flew the Vought "Gull-winged" F4U Corsairs which the Japanese pilots referred to as "The Whistling Death", but the Marines called it, "The Widow Maker". Major Axtell made the Marine Corps a career and retired as a Lt. Gen. in 1974. Front cachet depicts a photo of Lt.Gen. Axtell w/pertinent text, the USMC Flag, VMF-323's Death Rattler insignia, and it's franked with the "Purple Heart" and canceled, "AUG 1, 2005, MPO, Cherry Point, NC", on the 62nd anniversary of 323's beginning at the the location where it all began, and the General personally autographed each cover. Back cachet is a picture of an F4U Corsair, plus pertinent text. USCS Member# 11835. "TOP SARGE" Cachet. Cover is unaddressed, unsealed, and poly-sleeve enclosed.
