Description

Cover cacheted front & back & is unaddressed, unsealed & poly-sleeve enclosed. Medal of Honor Recipient for Extraordinary Heroism and Intrepidity during action against the Japanese on Guadalcanal 13-14 September 1942, Col. Merritt A. "Red Mike" Edson, C.O. of the 1st Marine Raider Battalion in repulsing overwhelming numbers (approximately 2,500) of Japanese enemy troops, in the defense of Lunga Ridge, near Henderson Field, which was extremely critical to U.S. and Allied Forces in the Solomon Islands. When the enemy violently & repeatedly assaulted our forces in desperate hand-to-hand combat with bayonets, rifles, pistols, hand grenades and knives. Col. Edson 'tho continuously exposed to hostile fire throughout the nights personally directed his battalion's defenses against a fanatical foe. His Raiders courageously withstood ferocious attacks, 'tho suffering 256 casualties among his 800 men. Front cachet is a photo of Maj.Gen. Edson (ca. 1947) with pertinent text, the Medal of Honor, the Raider Bn. Insignia, the Navy cross (2 awards, for Nicaragua & Tulagi), the Silver Star (Saipan & Tinian) and 2 Legion of Merit Medals. Franked with the "Purple Heart" and canceled, "RUTLAND VT 05701 FEB 08 2008", the city of his birth. Back cachet is his M.O.H. Citation. Nice, inexpensive, historical item of military memorabilia for the history buff or collector, or a terrific gift for a retired, active duty or fomer Marine in your life. Semper Fi! Cover # 4 of 10.
