There is a natural straight edge along the top of the stamp. Out of every pane of 50 stamps sold, 14 stamps along the edges of the pane (28%) would have had straight edges because of the way the panes were cut apart after printing. These days, far fewer than 28% of existing singles have straight edges, most likely because of "helpful" previous owners who provided their own (re)perforations.
