U.S. 143 USED. LHR VF/XF.
(E) I present for your
consideration an VF/XF used example of this
highly sought-after 1870 issue. The color is rich, all perfs are
intact, there are 4 great margins, the number "143" is written in
pencil on the back, there is a light HR and two very tiny thins in
the center. It may be re-perfed at the left, I am not
positive.
I am listing
this item for a client and believe that it is a genuine
143. There are two significant facts in support.
The first is that it is the correct paper. However, this may not
necessarily be a deciding factor becasuse according to Scott, after
the merger of A.B.N. & the C.B.N.C. in February,
1879, some sheets of stamps were inherited and later
released.
The second and the most telling
reason in support of the authenticity is the cancellation. It is an
oval with the numeral "1" inside,
attributal to the 1870 - 71 series and used prior
to 1879. According to Scott, "Killer
cancellations" of the "oval grid"
type with letters or numeral centers was first
used in 1876 Bank Note issues. By order of the
Postmaster General (July 23, 1860) it was
prohibited to use the town mark as a canceling instrument, and a
joined town and killer cancellation was
devised.
This is NOT a
190 which was first used on April 13,
1881 and did
NOT have oval cancels w/ a numeral or letter in
the center. (note). Scott
references a Grill on this item. In the description it states,
"On the 1870-71 stamps the grill impressions are usually
faint or incomplete." There appears to be some
"faint" grill impressions on this
stamp.
The 2008 SCV for a used
