Description

Military cover honoring Major Gregory "PAPPY" Boyington, Marine "Ace" (28 "Kills") 22 with USMC and 6 while a member of the "Flying Tigers in WW-II. Recipient of this Nation's Highest award for "Valor/Bravery", the "Medal of Honor". Major Boyington Commanded Marine Fighting Squadron 214's "Blacksheep" in the Pacific area when it's pilots totaled nine Aces while downing 94 Japanese aircraft during a 4-1/2 month period, August, 1943 - January, 1944. Pappy was shot down over Rabaul and was captured and held P.O.W. by the Japanese 'til wards end. He also earned the Navy Cross, Purple Heart and numerous other decorations. Cacheted front and back; Front depicts the VMF-214 Squadron Insignia with pertinent text, A b/w photo of the "Ace", the M.O.H., Navy Cross and Marine Corps Emblem. It's franked with the 41 cent Purple Heart stamp and canceled, "DEC 10 2007 COEUR D'ALENE, ID 83814", in the city of his birth. The back is an artist's rendering of the Ace in aerial combat downing a Japanese airplane over an island in the Pacific. USCS Member# 11835 Cover #4 of 10. "TOP SARGE" Cachet. Cover is unsealed, unaddressed, and poly-sleeve enclosed. Nice, inexpensive item of WW-II Military memorabilia.
