Description

Very attractive Cacheted cover (both sides) honoring the youngest Marine ever to receive this Nation's highest award for Valor at age 17. He lied about his age and joined the Marines at age 14. PFC Jacklyn Harrell Lucas was presented the M.O.H. by President Harry S. Truman 5 October 1945 in recognition of his Heroic actions on the 2nd day (D-day + 1) of the amphibious landing & assault on the Japanese heavily defended island of Iwo Jima 20 February 1945, unhesitatingly hurling his own body over his comrades upon one hand grenade, then pulling another under himself, thus absorbing the whole blasting force of the explosions with his own body. Front cachet is a photo of Lucas, with pertinent text, the M.O.H. and Purple Heart, and his 26th Marine Regiment, 5th Marine Division insignia. It's franked with the 39 cent Purple Heart and the 3 cent (1946) Iwo Jima stamps and canceled on the 63rd anniversary of that fateful day in 1945, "FEB 20 2008, HATTISBURG, MS", Lucas' hometown. Back cachet is Lucas' "Citation". Cover is unsealed, unaddressed and poly-sleeve enclosed. An interesting, inexpensive piece of historical military memorabilia. "TOP SARGE" Cachet. Cover# 4 of 20.
