Description

Very attractive, unsealed, unaddressed, poly-sleeve enclosed, cacheted cover (both sides) honoring the Marine Medal of Honor recipient (posthumously), affectionately known as, "The Fighting Field Music" (for forsaking his bugle for a machinegun), USMCR Sergeant Darrell Samuel Cole, in recognition of his unselfish acts of heroism on the 1st day of the amphibious landing & assault on the heavily defended island of Iwo Jima 19 February 1945, single-handedly wiping-out four (4) enemy pillboxes in order for his squad to advance on other Japanese fortifications. Upon returning to his men, he was instantly KIA by an enemy grenade. Front cachet is a photo of Cole, with pertinent text, the M.O.H., the Bronze Star, earned for his tenacity & courage on Saipan, Purple Heart, 2 awards for Saipan & Iwo Jima, and his Unit's insignia. It's ranked with the 39 cent Purple Heart and the 3 cent (1946) Iwo Jima stamps and canceled on the 63rd anniversary of that fateful day of Valor, "FEB 19 2008, FARMINGTON, MO", near Cole's birthplace, and Parkview Cemetery, where he's interred. Back cachet is Cole's MOH "Citation". An interesting, inexpensive piece of historical military memorabilia. "TOP SARGE" Cachet. Cover # 10 of 10.
