Description

Very attractive Cacheted cover (both sides) honoring Marine 1stLt Jack Lummus, recipient of this Nation's highest award for Valor, the Medal of Honor (posthumously) for his heroic actions of gallantry and intrepidity during the horrific battle against heavily fortified, fanatical, enemy Japanese Forces on Iwo Jima, March 8, 1945. Jack had been a star End with the New York Giants, having played vs. the Chicago Bears in the 1941 NFL Championship Game before joining the Marines. The back cachet is Jack's MOH Citation which reveals his heroic actions. As Jack lay dying on Iwo Jima, he told the Navy Corpsman, "Looks like the Giants lost a good end, Doc". Front cachet is a photo of Lummus, with pertinent text, the M.O.H. and Purple Heart, and his 27th Marine Regiment, 5th Marine Division insignia. It's franked with the 39 cent Purple Heart and the 3 cent (1946) Iwo Jima stamps and canceled on the 63rd anniversary of that fateful day of Valor, "MAR - 8 2008, ENNIS, TX USPS - 75119", his birthplace and city of interment. Cover is unsealed, unaddressed and poly-sleeve enclosed. An interesting, inexpensive piece of historical military memorabilia. USCS MEMBER # 11835. "TOP SARGE" Cachet. Cover# 6 of 10.
