He personally shot down sixteen (16) enemy aircraft while flying with the "Cactus Air Force" between 21 August - 15 September 1942 during the battle for Guadalcanal Front cachet is a photo of the "Ace", with pertinent text, some of his awards/decorations, the Medal of Honor, Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, the Bronze Star and Air Medal. The VMF-223 Battling Bulldogs Squadron insignia is also pictured.. It's franked with the 41 cent Purple Heart, and canceled, "LEXINGTON, OK FEB 24 2008 USPS - 73051", HIS PLACE OF BIRTH.
