Very attractive, unsealed, unaddressed, poly-sleeve enclosed, cacheted cover (both sides) honoring WW-II Marine Medal of Honor recipient (posthumously), 1st Lt. William D. 'HAWK' Hawkins, Scout Sniper Platoon Leader, in recognition of his unselfish acts of heroism on the attack on Betio Island during the assault on Tarawa where he was mortally wounded 21 November 1943 while leading an assault on a hostile position fortified by five (5) enemy machine guns, he refused to withdraw after being seriously wounded and single-handedly destroyed three (3) enemy pillboxes in order for his men to continue their advance on other Japanese fortifications. Front cachet is a photo of Lt. Hawkins, with pertinent text, the M.O.H., the Purple Heart, and his Unit's insignia. After securing the island, Tarawa's Airfield was named "Hawkin's Field" in his honor. It's franked with the 39 cent Purple Heart and canceled, "FORT SCOTT, KS FEB 15 2008 USPS 66701", his place of birth. Back cachet is his "MOH Citation".
