Description

He's credited with saving the Aicraft Carrier, USS Lexington by personally shooting down five (5) Japanese bombers on 20Feb1942 before they could attack the ship. It's franked with the 41 CENT "PURPLE HEART", and canceled, "UNITED WE STAND STATION CHICAGO, IL 60607 NOV 5 2001". THE CANCEL IS AN ERROR, SHOULD BE "2007" THE YEAR THE STAMP WAS ISSUED. Chicago's "O'Hare International Airport" is named in his honor and contains a museum. The back cachet shows a "Grumman F4F-3 Aircraft like that of Fighter Squadron 3, flown off the Lexington by "Butch" on that heroic, but fateful day 2/20/42. Cover # 8 of 10. "TOP SARGE" Cachet.
