This listing is for a single used Hong Kong definitive stamp showing Queen Victoria, face value 10 cents. The stamp is listed in Scott as #44, and was canceled at the British Treaty Port post office in Shanghai, China. Please see scan for details.

For those unfamiliar with the term "treaty port" the British, French, Japanese, Russians, Germans, and even the Americans each at one point or another operated "spheres of influence" in both the Chinese Empire and the Republic of China in the late 19^th and early 20^th centuries. This included the operation of post offices. In most cases, the various nations used stamps of their home countries, with and without special overprints that designated their use in China. In the case of the British, post offices were opened all over China, Japan, and Thailand-but all used Hong Kong stamps without overprint until 1917. Only the cancellation can be used to show that stamps used in Treaty Port post offices prior to that time. From 1917 to 1930, when the last British Treaty Port PO closed, these "Offices in China" stamps were used.
