The history of this postal card is as follows:

Scott #UX9a was issued in 1897 by the post office of the Provisional Government of Hawai`i, which was in existence between January 17, 1893, and July 3, 1894. This government, and its' successor the Republic of Hawai`i, sued for and won annexation to the USA on August 12, 1898. But until June 13, 1900, Hawai`i was an independent postal entity within the Universal Postal Union, and had its' own distinctive stamps.

2¢ postal cards in Hawai`i in the late 19^th century paid the international postal card rate for cards sent between UPU member nations.

The imprinted stamp on this postal card shows a map of the world with Hawai`i smack in the centre of the map. It also shows shipping routes from Honolulu to a variety of ports on the Pacific, including Hong Kong, San Francisco, etc. As all Hawaiian stamps and postal stationary were printed by the American Bank Note Company of New York after 1864, the mark of that company appears in the frame along the bottom of this card.

International: 14 days from the 7^th day after the item is sent.
