The item in this listing is a single unused Hawaiian postage stamp listed in Scott as #34, and issued in 1871. It is mint, no gum. 2007 CV $85 for mint with gum, $35 used.

This stamp is identifiable as being of the 1871 "dull rose" printing, of which about 31,000 stamps were issued between 1871 and 1893. (Scott does not distinguish between this printing and the 1879 "claret" printing, which is a different shade.)

The history of the stamp is as follows:

This stamp shows the portrait of Mataio Kekuanaoa, the last Kuhina Nui (Prime Minister) of Hawai`i and the father of two Hawaiian monarchs-Kings Kamehameha IV and Kamehameha V.

Scott #34 was issued following a new postal treaty between Hawai`i and the United States, which set postage rates at 6 cents per ounce. It would have paid for three ounce letters sent to the USA, and as such saw little use. 18 cents was a lot of money at the time. Following Hawaiian admission to the UPU in 1882, this stamp was rendered obsolete as all international postal rates were in multiples of 5 cents not 6. These stamps were kept on hand for sale to collectors, and many of the claret printing were overprinted in 1893 to creat Scott #71.
