Description
Professor Longfellow Had A
Future President in the Front Row!

As a professor at Harvard University in 1843, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow found a young Kenyon University graduate in his literature class.

That graduate student would go on to become the 19th president of the United States -- Civil War General and Ohio Governor Rutherford B. Hayes.

In Honor of this confluence of greatness, (and great beards!) cartoonist and cachetmaker Dave Bennett has depicted these two distinguished Americans together in the classroom, trying out a little appropriate poetry on the blackboard.

Each cover bears the beautiful new Longfellow commemorative, along with the 1¢ Longfellow stamp from the 1940 Famous Americans issue (#864) and the similarly-green 11¢ Rutherford B. Hayes issue (either #563 or #692), and the attractive official pictorial First Day of Issue cancel of March 15, 2007.
