The PENNY BLACK, as this issue is commonly known, is credited as the first adhesive postage stamp. It depicts the then young Queen Victoria, and was printed in sheets of 240 from 11 different plates by Perkins, Bacon & Petch. It is also the first of the avidly collected LINE ENGRAVED issues of Great Britain, and the issue is also actively collected by sheet position which is indicated in the lower corners of the stamp from position A-A to position T-L.
