The Universal Postal Union celebrated its 100th anniversary in 1974.

It marks the signing, on the 9th of October, 1874, in Berne, Switzerland, the establishment of a General Postal Union. It represented 22 states which attended the conference. Internationally accepted conventions governing the carriage of mail between any two countries was established. Freedom of transit for postal items was agreed upon. The conventions subsequent to the original established prescribes the methods for calculating and collecting postal charges, categories of postal items, fixed rates, weight and size limits, and conditions for forwarding and delivery.

In 1974 it was estimated that there were over 500,000 post offices throughout the world employing nearly 5 million people and handling 2.5 billion postal items. More than 150 countries belonged to the UPU in 1974. Most if not all of these countries celebrated the centenary by issuing their own commemorative stamps and first day covers.
