Description
Ben and His Turkey
Stroll the Streets of Philadelphia

On July 4 1776, the First Continental Congress selected three founding fathers -- Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, and Thomas Jefferson -- to select a political icon that best reflected the new country. Franklin used his legendary humor to rebut Adams’ nomination of the Bald Eagle and Jefferson’s Dove.
Franklin considered the Turkey a better emblem, but was outvoted by a large margin.

There is no hard proof that Franklin actually owned a pet turkey, but cartoonist and cachetmaker Dave Bennett
has depicted the “American DaVinci” strolling the streets of Philadelphia with a merry gobbler on his arm.

This full-color FDC celebrating Benjamin Franklin’s 300th birthday comes with an insert that reproduces a tongue-in-cheek letter that the then 78-year-old Franklin actually wrote to his daughter in 1784.

It is franked with two of the four Franklin Tricentennial stamps
of 2006 and combo-cancelled with the
3¢ Wild Turkey stamp (Scott #1077) from the 1956 Wildlife Conservation series.
